I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with Mattheas for nearly ten years now in a variety of capacities. Initially I met him through his participation with the Oakland Youth Orchestras as a talented young percussionist. He was always easy to coach and understood his role clearly as a part of the ensemble. Once he entered college it wasn't long before he joined OYO as the percussion mentor. During those years his expertise and influence on young percussionists was memorable. Both in the way that he taught and related to them, as well as how seamlessly he fit into the organization. Upon graduation from Oakland University, I once again had the pleasure of working with him as a percussionist and timpanist with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. His time with the RSO is enjoyed both through his musical contributions, as well as his generous help serving as stage manager. Whether teaching, playing or serving, all my interactions with him have been overshadowed by his humbleness toward the craft, and his humility to the process and those around him.
